While arguing for the passage of the Fair Employment Practice Act in March 1945, activist Ralph J. Banks notably told the Legislative Committee, “You can’t eat the Shaw Memorial.” Banks served as vice president of the Boston Equal Rights League, a civil rights organization founded in 1901. Massachusetts adopted the Fair Employment Practice Law in 1946.
