Item contributed by Massachusetts Historical Society
Following the filling of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, Governor Andrew traveled to Camp Meigs in Readville, MA for a ceremony that took place on May 18, 1863. Hundreds of Black Bostonians and prominent supporters of the 54th took a train that morning to witness the ceremony in which the Governor presented four flags to the regiment. Today, only remnants of the flags of the 54th exist in various museums.
This photograph is included in Captain Luis Emilio’s collection of photographs related to the regiment, now at the Massachusetts Historical Society.
