This print shows U.S. and Confederate soldiers engaged in combat during the 54th Regiment’s attack on Fort Wagner, Morris Island, South Carolina. On July 18, 1863, the 54th courageously led the assault. Despite their heroic efforts, the assault proved unsuccessful and the regiment suffered significant casualties. This print depicts the moment of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw’s death during the assault.
