Item contributed by Massachusetts Historical Society
This steamer originally operated in Boston for the Nahant Steamboat Company. During the Civil War, the United States Government took ownership of the Nelly Baker and this steamer served as both a transport ship and as a hospital ship. As it traveled through the South, the steamer picked up wounded soldiers.
This photograph is included in Captain Luis Emilio’s collection of photographs related to the regiment, now at the Massachusetts Historical Society.
