On May 12, 1863, 19-year-old student James W. Bush enlisted in the 54th in Xenia, Ohio. He served in Company K, survived the battle of Fort Wagner, and mustered out of the regiment in August 1865. After the Civil War, he served in the 9th Cavalry Regiment. He then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he worked as a porter for the Burlington Railroad. He married Alice Curtis in 1883, applying for a pension in 1888. Bush died “an old and respected citizen” on April 20, 1918 at the age of 74.
