Legacy of the 54th

Item contributed by National Parks of Boston

Following the election of President Barack Obama, local activists and cultural institutions began an annual tradition at the Memorial to keep conversations of race, equality, and social activism from falling out of the public discourse. Every July, people gather to collectively read Frederick Douglass’ scathing critique “What is the 4th of July to the Negro?” Here, participants gathered for the annual event in 2012.
