Born about 1844 in Montrose Pennsylvania, Smith enlisted in the 54th Massachusetts Company C in 1863. He likely saw action at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, the Battle of Olustee, and the Battle of Honey Hill. Surviving the war, Smith attended a 50th anniversary celebration of the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1913 in Boston.
