Item contributed by Massachusetts Historical Society
After the Battle of Port Royal, the United States Army established its Headquarters of the Department of the South in Hilton Head. The Port Royal House served food to those who came to the Headquarters. According to a local historical marker, the house stood as the tallest building in Hilton Head, and “it was home away from home for the correspondents of the various northern newspapers who regularly reported the island activities.”1
This photograph is included in Captain Luis Emilio’s collection of photographs related to the regiment, now at the Massachusetts Historical Society.
