From Concepts to Studies Making of the Memorial

Augustus Saint-Gaudens worked for many years to depict African American soldiers in detail as he created the Shaw/54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial. This plaster study-sketch was part of this process.




About item:

Plaster study-sketched of African American soldier for use in the Shaw/54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial.  One third life-size.  Head of a young Black male with strong jaw and large eyes, wearing a cap. Right side of face is not fully modeled because of its intended position in the finished relief.  Height 5.75 inches.  SAGA 1435.
