Item contributed by Massachusetts Historical Society
On September 7, 1963 the 54th Massachusetts returned to Morris Island with the successful capture of Fort Wagner. Months earlier, this regiment fought at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. The 54th Massachusetts’ heroic assault on the fort proved how vital the contributions of Black soldiers were to the United States Army and inspired thousands of African Americans to enlist.
This photograph is included in Captain Luis Emilio’s collection of photographs related to the regiment, now at the Massachusetts Historical Society. The regiment may have seen this beach house during their time on Morris Island.
