During the Civil War, Tubman served as a spy, scout, and nurse for the United States Army. Harriet Tubman first crossed paths with the 54th Massachusetts in June or July of 1863. She served meals to the men of the regiment, and later claimed she had served Colonel Robert Gould Shaw his last meal.
