Item contributed by National Parks of Boston

Harriet Tubman, who worked with the 54th during the Civil War, visited the Memorial in 1905 as part of a Memorial Day commemoration. During the ceremony, Tubman “bent with the weight of years, gazed long and tenderly at the magnificent work of the sculptor and dropped a silent tear for the departed dead.”
