On May 5, 1863, 23-year-old barber John W. Harper enlisted in the 54th in Zanesville, Ohio. He served in Company K, survived the Battle of Fort Wagner, and mustered out of the regiment in August 1865. Later in life he lived in Fort Meade, South Dakota. It is possible but unconfirmed that Harper served with the Black 25th Infantry Regiment at Fort Meade from 1880 to 1887.
