The Shaw/54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial by Augustus Saint-Gaudens was one of the first public memorials to depict African American men as individualized people. This one third life size bronze study of an anonymous African American soldier demonstrates this dignity.

Solder's head, bronze recast of a study for the Shaw/54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial.  One third life size bronze study mounted on black marble base.  Height 6 inches.  Wearing cap, eyes directed front, scant moustache, full face, right side of lead less modelled than left.  SAGA 886.
